Duane Gene "Digger" Carey (born April 30, 1957 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a retired American astronaut .

Carey received a bachelor's degree in 1981 and a masters degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1982 . He became a cadet in the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1981 and completed his pilot training there in 1983. After stationing in Louisiana , South Korea and Spain , he was trained as a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California in 1991 and was also used as such there.

Astronaut activity

In April 1986 Carey was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. After completing his training as a shuttle pilot, he was employed for technical tasks in the astronaut's office and as a liaison officer ( CAPCOM ) on shuttle missions. Carey left NASA in October 2004 and is currently teaching school children about his astronaut experience.

STS-109

On March 1, 2002, Carey started as a pilot of the Columbia space shuttle on the fourth maintenance flight for the Hubble space telescope . Five spacewalks (EVAs), among others, a new energy unit, a new camera and new solar panels were installed. During the EVAs, Carey took video and photos of the repair work.

Duane Carey and his wife Cheryl have two children.
