Duboisia hopwoodii is a plant type from the genus Duboisia in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). A common English name is Pituri .

description

Duboisia hopwoodii is a round-growing shrub that reaches heights of 4 m and widths of 3 m. Its leaves are narrowly elliptical or ovate-elliptical to linear, sessile or rarely provided with a petiole up to 3 mm long . They are 2 to 12 cm long and 1 to 13 mm wide and are colored the same on both leaf sides.

The inflorescences are narrow and provided with 0.4 to 5 mm long bracts . The flowers are on 1.5 to 5 mm long pedicels . The calyx is 1.5 to 4.5 mm long, with the calyx lobes usually about 1/3 the length of the calyx tube. The crown reaches lengths of 7 to 15 mm, the corolla tube has a diameter of 4.5 to 8 mm at the tip. The corolla lobes are 2.5 to 5.5 mm long. Four stamens are formed that are 3 to 8 mm long. The stylus is provided with a length of 3.5 to 6.5 mm equal to or shorter than the upper stamens.

The fruit is a berry that is mostly spherical or almost spherical, but rarely elliptical. It measures 2 to 5 mm in diameter, is purple-black in color and has a 3 to 5 mm long stem. The seeds are 2 to 2.5 mm long.

Distribution and locations

The species is distributed in the arid areas of Western Australia , the southern Northern Territory and South Australias and extends to central-western Queensland and western New South Wales . It usually grows on red or yellow sand or sandy loam, on plains, low dunes or ridges. The species is often found in connection with prickly head grasses ( Triodia ).

meaning

The plant contains nicotine and nornicotine and is therefore used by Aborigines as an animal poison and anesthetic. The common name Pituri is accordingly also used for Australian species of the genus Nicotiana that can be used as anesthetics .
