The fragrant snail thread ( Cochliostema odoratissimum ) is one of two plant species of the genus snail thread ( Cochliostema ), which belongs to the commelina family (Commelinaceae).
description
The fragrant snail thread is a large, evergreen herbaceous plant that is strongly reminiscent of funnel bromeliads in its habitus . She is an epiphyte . The leaves are arranged in rosettes. The parallel- veined leaves are up to 15 cm wide and about 1 m long.
The complex inflorescences are axillary. There are noticeable bracts . The intensely fragrant, hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers are threefold and are the largest in the family with a diameter of 4.5 to 5 cm. The free bracts are not designed in the same way, there is a calyx and a crown. The blue-violet petals are nailed short and fringed long. The six stamens are spiral (hence the name!), Only three are fertile . The three fertile stamens are on one side of the flower and are connected by their stamens, the stamens are enlarged and form a hood around the spirally twisted anthers . The three pistils have become an ovary grown. The scar is three-lobed.
The long flowering period extends from January to April and again from June to October.
Occurrence
The home is Costa Rica , Nicaragua , Panama , Colombia and Ecuador. The species thrives mainly in the Atlantic primary forest. On the Osa Peninsula (Costa Rica, Pacific side) there are still isolated specimens with rather white flowers. The bright blue flowers can only be found in the Atlantic areas.

There are two species in the genus Cochliostema :

- Cochliostema velutinum Read : It occurs only in Colombia.
Name declaration
The botanical name Cochliostema is derived from the Greek kochlías for snail and stema for stamen; odoratissimum means strongly fragrant.
