Dumbarton is a small settlement in the Central Otago District of the Otago Regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is 5 km south of Roxburgh on the Clutha River . The New Zealand State Highway 8 connects Dumbarton with Roxbourgh and Alexandra in the north and Lawrence and Gore in the southeast and southwest.
history
The Roxburgh Branch , a branch line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway , ran on the other bank of the Clutha and connected Roxburgh with the South Island Main Trunk Railway from April 18, 1928 . The nearest train station was in Teviot , which is 4 km southeast of Dumbarton . The entire line was closed on June 1, 1968 and subsequently dismantled.
