Dwight Nelson

Dwight Nelson (born July 22, 1946 in Kingston , † December 24, 2018 ) was a Jamaican politician ( JLP ) and trade unionist ( BITU ). He was Jamaica's Minister of National Security from April 2009 to January 2012 .

Life

Nelson attended St. Aloysius Boys School and St. George's College. He studied at the University of the West Indies , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts .

Nelson then worked as a teacher at the Golden Grove Primary School in St. Thomas and became a member of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU). He received further training from the Trade Union Education Institute, the Labor College of Canada, the Rewely House & Ruskin College at Oxford University , the State School of Labor and Industrial Relations at Cornell University and the Turin School of International Studies. Nelson held various positions at BITU, including Vice President , Island Supervisor and Senior Negotiating Officer for the union. In 2010 he was Senior Vice President of BITU and President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU).

In the Jamaica Labor Party, Nelson served as chairman of Young Jamaica, the youth organization of the JLP. He was appointed to his first public office for the JLP in 1983 when he was appointed senator. Nelson became a Senator again in 2002 and 2007. In the parliamentary election on September 3, 2007, the JLP won and formed the new government. Prime Minister Bruce Golding appointed Nelson Cabinet Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Finance . He was sworn in as Minister on September 14, 2007. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, Nelson took over the Ministry of National Security on April 6, 2009. After Derrick Smith , who resigned for health reasons in May 2008, and his immediate predecessor Trevor MacMillan , Nelson was the third man to head the ministry responsible for internal security during Golding's administration. When Andrew Holness succeeded Golding as Prime Minister from October 2011 to January 2012, he took Nelson into his cabinet as Minister of National Security. He remained a minister until he had to leave office on January 6, 2012 due to the JLP's electoral defeat at the end of 2011.

Nelson was awarded the Order of Distinction , Officer Class, in 1982 . In 2005 he was awarded the Order of Distinction, Commander Class.
