The EC Panthers Frohnleiten is an ice hockey club in the municipality of Frohnleiten in Styria . The ice hockey club Black Panthers Frohnleiten was founded in 1992 and in 1998 the club registered with the ÖEHV and StEHV as a proper club. Since the 2014/2015 season the club has been playing in the Styrian elite league, the third highest ice hockey league in Austria. There has been a new board since the beginning of the 2015/2016 season and for the current 2016/2017 season the club has been further strengthened by many new players. The club made it into the play-offs in the 2016/17 season.
history
The Ungersdorfer Murkanadier and the Laufnitzdorfer Murgeiger were the two original cells of Frohnleitener ice hockey since the end of the 50s. These two clubs merged and a unified team was born. The squad at that time consisted of over 20 players, including Baron Franz Mayer-Melnhof. A legionnaire from Frohnleiten named Manfred Koller was already playing for GSV (Grazer Sportverein) and a second was soon to follow him: Wolfgang Graf for ATSE.
The club moved to the natural ice rink in Schönau, a district of Frohnleiten. At that time, the leap into the Styrian national league was dared. This consisted of the following teams: Kapfenberg SV, Weiz, Bruck / Mur, Mariazell, Eisenerz, Zeltweg and Frohnleiten. After the national league time, the SEC (Schönauer Ice Hockey Club) and the Stammtisch Weissenbach merged to form a Wilder club, until on April 10, 1992 the "EC Frohnleiten Black Panthers" was registered as a regular club. (Joined the ÖEHV and StEHV in 1998). The club has been based here since the ice rink in Frohnleiten was completed.
The management of the association managed to achieve the high-flying of the panthers in the state league and the promotion to the Styrian elite league through the excellent work and professional management. From the 2008/09 season the club was called "EC Dylan Panthers Austria". With the entry of the main sponsor Dylan Austria GmbH, with its headquarters in the Netherlands, a name change was associated. After the departure of the main sponsor, the club has been called "EC Panthers Frohnleiten" since the 2012/13 season.
From the 2015/16 season Karl Edler took over the helm as chairman with Gerhard Hain as vice. Richard Austin is president of the association.
Combat team
Since the 2014/15 season, the club has been back in the Styrian elite league under coach Bernd Jäger. This season five teams took part in the league. Besides Frohnleiten also: EV Zeltweg 2010 , EC ATSE Graz , EC Bulls Weiz and Kings Leoben . In 16 games, the Panthers were able to win three games, one of them in overtime. The team from Frohnleiten had to admit defeat by one point against Weiz and could not move into the play-off.
After the team EC Rattlesnakes moved from the Styrian regional league to the elite league in the 2015/16 season , the league now has six teams. In 20 games, the Panthers from Frohnleiten were able to get one victory and two points from overtime. At the end of the season there are only five points and the team is clearly trailing behind the bottom of the table.
The goal of the year was to reach the play-offs, this was a realistic goal due to the many high quality new players, which one finally achieved. Another club has joined the Elite League, the Kapfenberg Sports Club: Ice Hockey Section (KSV). The club played the previous season a league higher in the Alps Hockey League .
For the first time, the club was able to qualify for the qualifying round of the Styrian elite league. The opponent in the semifinals is the KSV. Kapfenberg was the big favorite in this duel. The series ended 3-1 for Kapfenberg. Frohnleiten remains the only team that could beat KSV in regular time.
In the elite league there is a new club with the Graz 99ers Juniors. However, the LE Kings do not participate in league operations this season. The Panthers will have the opening game on September 23, 2017 in the ice rink in Liebenau against the Graz 99ers Juniors.
offspring
For several years there has been a completely new team of junior coaches. Jürgen Bedits acts as head coach, with Philipp Hanschel, Christopher Egger, Manuel Laritz and Mario Lechner as goalkeeper coach at his side. In addition to ice hockey training, the club also runs an ice skating school for children of all ages. The youngsters often play in Styrian tournaments, such as the Bambini Cup at the Liebenau ice rink in Graz . The youngsters have been playing in the Styrian U11 league since the 2016/17 season . The U11 team of the Frohnleiten Panthers became Styrian national champions in a syndicate with NHL Graz in the 2016/17 season. The team won eight out of nine games.
Bernd Jäger has been the head coach of the Frohnleiten Panthers since the 2010/11 season. Jäger played from 2000 to 2006 in the EBEL with the Grazer 99ers , the Vienna Capitals and the Black-Wings Linz . In the 2003/04 season he won the Austrian championship title with the Vienna Capitals.
