E nicht se pode exterminá-lo? is a multi-part television film by the Swedish director Solveig Nordlund from 1979, based on the work of Karl Valentin .

action

The work, conceived and filmed as a stage play, combines the sketches The Repaired Headlight , The Funny Love Letter , Obsession , Recipe for the Funny Salad , Bei Schaja , Im Hutsalon , In der Apotheke and Im Schallplattenladen . The film shows changing situations that always lead to misunderstandings, for example in the store or among neighbors, and are somewhere between nonsense and exaggerated logic.

background

The film was based on the production by Luís Miguel Cintra at the Teatro da Cornucópia , and in this way introduced Karl Valentin's work in Portugal. However, the film never got to commercial showing and was broadcast as a five-part television series on the initiative of director Fernando Lopes , who was program director of the second channel of the state television broadcaster RTP at the time .

The performance of a dead foreign humorist with no relation to Portugal, who also lived in a different era , was unusual. The fact that the play was both entertaining and thought provoking led the critics to praise Cintra's staging, but also especially the author Valentin. Since then, Karl Valentin has been played repeatedly in Portugal. In 2011 a piece was performed with Uma Bizarra Salada , u. a. with active members of the television series Os Contemporâneos , which is based on 6 of the 8 scenes, which are essentially E nicht se pode exterminá-lo? made out. The skits were created in the times of crisis in Germany before the Second World War and, from the point of view of Portuguese directors, are particularly suitable for adaptation in the times of the current financial crisis in the country. E nicht se pode exterminá-lo? means in German something like "And can't you just destroy it?".
