Eagle Nest is a municipality in Colfax County in the US state of New Mexico .
geography
Eagle Nest is located directly on Eagle Nest Lake and in very mountainous terrain between New Mexico's highest mountain, Wheeler Peak (4011 m) in the west and Baldy Mountain (3792 m) in the east. Raton is 80 kilometers northeast , Cimarron 30 kilometers east and Santa Fe about 90 kilometers southwest . The US Highway 64 runs through the town.
history
Various Indian tribes originally roamed the area to hunt the abundant game population. For example, bears , pumas , deer and elk are still found in the surrounding forests . After 1800, some settlers initially ranched cattle in open areas. Gold was found in the area in the 1860s, prompting many gold prospectors to settle. Between 1916 and 1918, a privately funded dam, the Eagle Nest Dam, was built that dammed the waters of the Cimarron River , creating the Eagle Nest Lake. The dam was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The place was initially called Therma , after the name of the daughter of the local postmaster. Because of the eagle , which in the region their nests ( Eagle nests docked), town and the lake received in 1930 the name Eagle Nest and Eagle Nest Lake .
Today the place is mainly active in tourism and is popular with mountaineers, nature watchers, hunters and anglers because of its scenic beauty and its abundance of game and fish. Various winter sports activities are also possible. In 2004 the Eagle Nest Lake State Park opened, which also includes a campsite .
Demographics
In 2012 a population of 278 people was determined, which means a decrease of 9.2% compared to the year 2000. The median age of residents in 2012 was 51.1 years, above the New Mexico median of 45.5 years.
20.7% of today's residents are of Hispanic origin. 16.7% of other immigrant groups came from England , 15.4% from Germany and 14.7% from Ireland .
