Eagle Seagull was an American indie band from Lincoln , Nebraska .

Band history

Eagle Seagull was founded in 2004 by singer and songwriter Eli Mardock together with JJ Idt and Mike Overfield. First they played alternative country music in the style of Wilco . In October 2004 the other three band members were added. During this time the group began making their first public appearances in Lincoln. The shows soon caused quite a stir in the Nebraska scene, so that Brian Vaughan's attention was drawn to the band. The former Sub Pop and Saddle Creek employee was in the process of starting his own label Paper Garden Records in Nashville and signed Eagle Seagull to first release his label. In October 2005, just a year after the band first appeared, their self-titled debut album came out. The reactions in the music press and on online forums were enthusiastic. Towards the end of the year, Eagle Seagull was featured frequently in various Best of 2005 and Bands to watch 2006 . Although the band had no national marketing yet, their debut album had to be reissued again and again, so that 2006 is often given as the release date of the debut album.

In Europe, the well-known German label L'age d'or - it was selling The Gossip , Metric and Tocotronic , among others - became aware of the group and took over the distribution, so that in October 2006 the debut album was also released on the old one Continent could appear. In addition, L'age d'or published the single Photograph . Eagle Seagull received great acclaim and reached position 2 in the Austrian indie charts, just behind The Killers . At the end of the year the band was in the Best of 2006 of Rolling Stone and Spex magazines listed and their songs appeared on various compilations.

In 2010 the follow-up album entitled The Year of the How-To Book was released on PIAS Recordings. The producer is Ryan Hadlock, who has worked with The Gossip, Blonde Redhead and Stephen Malkmus .

On September 30th of the same year, the band announced their breakup on their Facebook page. However, Murdock and Butler will continue to work together under the name Beauty in the Beast .

style

Eagle Seagull does not fit into existing music genres, because the band has their own distinctive sound between country , folk and indie rock . The well-known indie band Bright Eyes , also from Lincoln, Nebraska, have a similar style of music.

Eagle Seagull initially played alternative country in the style of Wilco . It was only after Eli Mardock had switched from guitar to keyboard and the other three band members joined in October 2004 that the band's final sound began to develop.
