Ebalus Mancer , called the Bastard ( French : Ebles Manzer ; * around 870, † 935 ), was Count of Poitou , Auvergne and Duke of Aquitaine from the Ramnulfiden family .

Life

Ebalus Mancer was an illegitimate son of Count Ramnulf II of Poitou . Although he succeeded his father in Poitiers could begin, he had 892 before the count Adémar escape the with the support of King Odos the Poitou occupied. Ebalus found refuge with William the Pious , the first prince of Aquitaine . With his help he recaptured Poitiers in 902 in Adémar's absence. From King Charles III. the simple-minded with whom Ebalus had grown up, he was immediately recognized as the legitimate Count of Poitou. Ebalus gave the Abbey of Saint-Maixent to Savary, Vice Count of Thouarswho had supported him. He founded other vice-counties in Aulnay and Melle and dissolved the vice-county of Poitiers after the death of the incumbent Maingaud in 925.

Ebalus conquered the Limousin in 904 and in 911 was one of the military commanders who defeated the Normans under Rollo near Chartres , which then led to the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte .

In the years 926 and 927, the Aquitaine dukes Wilhelm II and Acfred died one after the other . Ebalus was used by the latter as the heir to his estate, which was concentrated around the Berry , Auvergne and the Velay . With this Ebalus secured himself and his descendants the undisputed position of the first prince of Aquitaine. Although it can be assumed that he thereby also claimed the ducal dignity, Ebalus is referred to exclusively as Comes in contemporary documents .

During the power struggle between the Carolingians and Robertinians in 922 Ebalus stood on the side of King Charles III. of the simple-minded against Margrave Robert . For this reason, in 923, he also refused recognition to the new King Rudolf from the Robertin party. The latter then tried to curtail Ebalus' power. He took the berry away from him in 932 and transferred the Auvergne to Count Raimund Pons of Toulouse to whom he also conferred the title of Duke of Aquitaine. Furthermore, the king made La Marche , which was dependent on the Lords of Charroux , into an independent county.

Ebalus was still unmarried in October 891. He later married Aremburga; in February 911 he was married to Emilienne. Nothing more is known about both women. He had two sons, both probably from Aremburga:
