Eberhard Gutsleff the Elder
Eberhard Gutsleff the Elder (born March 21, 1654 in Urvaste , † December 30, 1724 in Tallinn ) was a Baltic German theologian . He was best known as a Bible translator into the North Estonian language .
life and work
Eberhard Gutsleff was born as the son of the theologian and Bible translator Johann Gutslaff († 1657) and his wife Anna Habern (around 1620-after 1674). He studied theology from 1675 to 1677 at the University of Wittenberg . From 1681 to 1700 he was a deacon and from 1700 until his death in 1724 pastor at the Church of the Holy Spirit in the Estonian capital Tallinn (German Reval ). From 1700 he was also assessor at the consistory .
Between 1704 and 1706 Eberhard Gutsleff was instrumental in translating the New Testament into the North Estonian language. In 1715, together with his son Heinrich Gutsleff, he headed the final editing and editing of the translation.
He was also involved in the translation work of the entire Bible into the North Estonian language, which appeared in Tallinn in 1739.
Eberhard Gutsleff was buried in the Olaikirche in Tallinn in February 1725 .
Private life
Eberhard Gutsleff was married to Catharina Niederhoff († 1710). Sons were the pastor of Kullamaa ( Goldenbeck ) and Bible translator Heinrich Gutsleff (around 1682–1747) and Eberhard Gutsleff the Younger (around 1700–1749), the superintendent of Saaremaa ( Ösel ).
