Eberhard Haufe (born February 7, 1931 in Dresden ; † March 26, 2013 in Weimar ) was a German specialist in German studies and editor , who became known for his extensive work as an editor, primarily of classical German literature. In Weimar, for example, he worked as editor of the Schiller national edition and as editor and administrator of the estate of Johannes Bobrowski .

Life

Haufe grew up in Großröhrsdorf and went to school in Radeberg . From 1950 to 1954 he studied German, history and art history at the University of Leipzig , and until 1958 he was assistant to Hermann August Korff and Hans Mayer .

In 1958 he was at the University of Leipzig for "political nonconformity" relegated , the promotion was refused. In 1958 he was a short-term German lecturer at the Leipzig mission seminar , from 1959 to 1971 he worked for the all-German national Schiller edition at the Goethe and Schiller Archives in Weimar.

In 1962, Haufe met Johannes Bobrowski, who at the time was an editor at Union Verlag in East Berlin . In 1964 Haufe was finally admitted to the doctorate. In 1971 he suffered a stroke, as a result of which he was disabled. Since 1972 he has worked as a freelance editor and literary critic. He also worked for the daily newspaper of the GDR CDU , the Thüringer Tageblatt , in which he published over 150 reviews on current GDR literature. At the same time, Haufe developed an extensive editorial activity and published works by Schiller , Goethe , Klopstock , Jochmann and Bobrowski.

Political commitment

From 1989 to 1991 Haufe was a founding member of the Independent Committee of Inquiry of the Weimar Citizens' Movement, and from 1990 he was a member of the Weimar City Council , of which he was the first vice-president. In 1991 he suffered a second stroke, and in 1993 he gave up parliamentary activity. In 1992 Haufe was politically rehabilitated and was awarded a professorship by the University of Leipzig, which had once expelled him.

A student of Haufe, the philosopher Manfred Riedel , later stated that for Haufe, despite many political problems, leaving the GDR was never "up for discussion". With regard to “relatives and friends, the like-minded group of quiet people in the country, (the) Christian people and (other) guardians of the tradition of intellectual Germany”, Haufe remained in the GDR.
