Life

After graduating from high school, Eberhard Schrammen studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1906 , then from 1907 at the Grand Ducal Saxon University of Fine Arts in Weimar . He stayed in Paris and received a partial scholarship for the Villa Romana at the Bugra in Leipzig in 1914 .

After the end of the First World War, Schrammen became one of the first students at the Bauhaus in 1919 , where he initially attended the architecture course. On May 18, 1919, Schrammen published the first edition of the Bauhaus magazine “Der Austausch”, which also included his own woodcuts . In 1920 he married the Bauhaus student Toni van Haken-Nelißen, they had a son. From 1921 he studied with Lyonel Feininger in the Bauhaus print shop and in Lothar Schreyer's stage workshop .

Schrammen completed a one-year traineeship with a wood turner based in Weimar and now made painted wooden children's toys (for example building blocks and a walking bike). His wooden objects were exhibited at the first Bauhaus exhibition in 1923, including the “Bauhaus mascots” in the basic shapes of cylinder, sphere and hemisphere and in the basic colors blue, red and yellow.

When the Bauhaus had to move to Dessau , Schrammen went with his family to the Gildenhall artists' colony , where he opened a turnery and wood art workshop. Schrammen became a member of the German Werkbund (DWB) . Business was going well until the global economic crisis that began in 1929 , then he had to close the workshop and from then on concentrated on photography. The family moved to Lübeck-Siems in 1933 . He created photo series for the Mauritius publishing house and the Linden publishing house. In addition, Schrammen and his wife experimented with the photogram technique . During the Second World War, the work suffered from lack of materials and he resumed painting. In October 1947 he had a solo exhibition in Lübeck.
