Eberhard Windeck , including wind area, (* around 1380 in Mainz , † 1440 / 1441 ) was a German-Hungarian merchant and chronicler. He came from a Mainz council family.

life and work

Eberhard Windeck was born around 1380, grew up in Mainz and was the son of the tenant of the Mainz gold scales. In order to learn the trade of a merchant, he spent several years in Erfurt , Prague and Paris , then worked as a freelance merchant and was most recently margrave mill master in Berlin, before he joined King Sigismund in 1415 , accompanying him on his entire trip to Western Europe and due to his commercial knowledge which concerned the transfer of money and credits as well as coin and currency relations, was indispensable for the king. Even during the Council of Constance , Windeck stayed at the ruler's side until he was sent to Italy to join the newly elected Pope Martin V in 1418 . In 1424 Windeck returned to Mainz and received a share of the Mainz Rhine toll from Sigismund in gratitude for his services .

After Windeck had settled down in Mainz again, he worked as a self-employed businessman, mainly traded in fur and joined the furrier guild . In the disputes that broke out in 1428 between the guilds and patricians of his hometown, he emerged as a leading politician on the side of the guilds. In 1428 and 1429 he is also mentioned as the builder of the parish church of St. Quintin .

In the years that followed, Windeck largely withdrew from politics and concentrated mainly on defending his status as a successful businessman and the customs loan granted to him by Sigismund, which was contested by the previous owners. He also wrote a chronicle about Sigismund's reign, which he himself describes as the Emperor Sigismund's book . In it he depicts the deeds of Sigismund and emphasizes not only his services to the empire and Christianity, but also his own close and friendly relationship with the king. Windlock's chronicle is available in several versions in the manuscripts (a: up to 1438, b: up to 1439, c - no longer by Windeck - up to 1442) and is considered an outstanding historiographical work of its time, in which the history of the king and the empire and the individual Connect the perspective of a contemporary observer.
