Mountain description

The fully forested Ebersberg is a steep volcanic mountain made of phonolite rock . Within the mixed forest , which mainly consists of beech and spruce, there are some rubble heaps . On the summit there is a ruined castle with two towers, one of which is used as a lookout tower. It offers a beautiful view of the Fuldaer Land, the Kuppenrhön and the Hochrhön . The entire area around this monument is well cared for and is a popular destination.

history

On the Ebersberg we can still find the remains of a historical rampart. It is the remainder of the Ebersburg Castle built in the 12th century by the Lords of Ebersberg . This was destroyed and rebuilt several times due to disputes with the Fulda monastery . After the last destruction it was only inhabited sporadically and fell into disrepair except for the inner castle wall and two towers. It was restored in 1853 and 1963, so that a tower is still accessible today.

Hiking trails and views

In bad weather, there is a path that can only be used with four-wheel drive vehicles, but which is closed with a barrier. In particular from the accessible tower, for which everyone receives the key for a deposit at the nearby Schafhof, there is a good all-round view of the Fuldaer Land, the Kuppen- and Hochrhön . This has been affected by the trees in the castle courtyard in recent years.

From 1995, the administration of the Hessische Rhön Nature Park set up a total of thirteen information boards on hiking trails around the Ebersberg, starting at the hikers' car park at the foot. The routes have degrees of difficulty between easy walks and medium-difficulty hikes.
