Ebratsweiler is a place in the municipality of Herdwangen-Schönach in the district of Sigmaringen , Baden-Württemberg .

geography

Ebratsweiler is located in the upper Linzgau at an altitude of 640 m on the road between Pfullendorf and Überlingen .

history

The oldest documented form of the name is Eberhartswiler . The name can thus be explained as a hamlet that was probably founded by a person named Eberhart.

Ebratsweiler is first mentioned in a document in 1251 when Bertold and Albert von Ebratsweiler appear as witnesses to a sales contract. The two are members of a knight family von Ebratsweiler, which is often documented in the 13th and 14th centuries and settled towards the end of the 14th century on the Swiss shores of Lake Constance and in Winterthur , where it probably died out soon afterwards. The field name Burstel (= South German " Burgstall ") indicates a castle belonging to the Lords of Ebratsweiler that has now disappeared .

Possessions in Ebratsweiler had u. a. the monasteries of Salem and Petershausen . The Uberlinger Spital owned the lower jurisdiction , whereas Ebratsweiler ecclesiastically belonged to the Aftholderberg branch of the Pfullendorf parish, later to Herdwangen . When it was mediatized in 1803, Ebratsweiler fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden . The place had 60 inhabitants at that time.

In 1924 the previously independent municipality was incorporated into the Herdwangen municipality and has been part of the Herdwangen-Schönach municipality since 1974.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the Lords of Ebratsweiler is depicted in the Zurich coat of arms from 1340. However, it apparently never appeared as the municipality's coat of arms.

Culture and sights

  • The most striking building is the former Hirschen inn on Landstrasse.
  • The St. Wendelin Chapel, also called Wendlinuskappele, was built in 1907 in place of an older chapel from the 18th century. There is a fountain in the forecourt.
