ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability

ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is a worldwide association of cities, municipalities and counties for environmental protection and sustainable development .

Origin and development

ICLEI was founded as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives at the conclusion of the first World Congress of Local Authorities for Sustainable Development in September 1990 at the United Nations in New York. In 2003 the General Assembly ( Council ) decided to rename it to ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability . The seat of the association is Bonn , where the world secretariat is located in the former office building of the Belgian embassy .

The world secretariat of the new world association of cities started its work in Toronto (Canada) in August 1991, at the same time the European secretariat was set up in Freiburg im Breisgau . ICLEI is now represented with twelve offices at ten locations on all continents.

The mission statement is to build and support a worldwide movement of municipalities in order to achieve tangible improvements in global sustainability through the entirety of local activities - with a particular focus on global environmental conditions.

Constitution and Organization

The association is a democratically constituted member association of municipalities (cities, municipalities, districts, municipal associations and comparable bodies). The organization has around 1000 members in 70 countries.

  • Board (Executive Committee) of 21 elected and 2 ex-officio members, the regional composition of which reflects the geographical distribution of the members
  • Advisory Council made up of personalities from international public life

ICLEI organizes three key projects:

Ecomobility Alliance

The EcoMobility Alliance is an international non-profit partnership that aims to promote ecologically-oriented mobility and thus reduce people's dependence on private vehicles around the world. It was founded in October 2011 in Changwon ( Korea ) as a successor organization to the Global Alliance for EcoMobility , which was founded on December 10, 2007 in Bali on the occasion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali (UNFCCC-COP-13). ICLEI represents and houses the Allianz secretariat with the office in Bonn .

EcoMobility World Festival

The EcoMobility World Festival is a biennial, monthly project that was initiated by ambitious and visionary city leaders to present a car-free lifestyle in a city district. The residents of this district want to show the world that a normal life can be lived without being dependent on car ownership. They use better framework conditions for walking , cycling and public transport and use light electric vehicles to replace otherwise motorized journeys.

The 3rd EcoMobility World Festival took place from October 1st to 31st, 2017 in Kaohsiung ( China ).

EcoMobility World Congress

As part of the EcoMobility World Festival, the EcoMobility World Congress presents a new, visionary and enriching perspective for sustainable urban mobility. The congresses are intended to convey comprehensive international knowledge in the field of eco-mobility. Renowned transportation experts, inverters, decision makers, city guides and innovators from around the world present some of the world's best case studies ; In fruitful discussions about mobility for the future of sustainable cities, the participants should learn kickstarts (introduction) and the implementation of good policies.

In addition to the above projects, ICLEI's EcoMobile City (Sustainable Urban Transport) agenda also works in the following areas:

  • EcoLogistics is an initiative to cities in the exchange on urban transport logistics support
  • Health and Mobility Management : The agenda also works with cities to highlight the public health impact of automobile addiction in sedentary life, poor air quality, and childhood obesity
  • Road safety : Urban mobility is the number one cause of death and permanent disability in many developing countries . Through its work in eco-mobility, ICLEI aims to help cities prioritize non-motorized and public transport and design better and safer cities.
