The Ranji Stadium ( Bengali রঞ্জি স্টেডিয়াম ), also known as Eden Gardens ( Bengali ইডেন গার্ডেন্স ) known, is located in the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and is the oldest cricket - Stadium in India . It is the venue for the Bengal cricket team and, after renovations for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, has a total of 66,349 spectators. It is the second largest stadium in India after the Yuba Bharati Krirangan .

Capacity and infrastructure

The stadium had an estimated capacity of approximately 96,000 seats until the renovation work in 2011. However, these were significantly reduced in order to meet the requirements of the International Cricket Council for hosting the 2011 World Cup. These renovations were controversial in terms of schedule and resulted in the game between India and England at the tournament being postponed. However, the other games could be saved.

International cricket

The first test match that was played in Eden Gardens took place in January 1934 between India and England . Since then it has functioned regularly for Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 as the home ground for the Indian national team. It was also used for a preliminary round match and the final of the Cricket World Cup 1987 , a semi-final at the Cricket World Cup 1996 and for three preliminary round matches at the Cricket World Cup 2011.

Use in the IPL

In the Indian Premier League , the stadium is used by the Kolkata Knight Riders as the home stadium.
