Edgardo Zayas

Edgardo Zayas (born August 20, 1964 in Ponce , Puerto Rico as Edgardo Zayas Martínez ; died November 29, 2017 in Wuppertal , Germany) was a Puerto Rican opera and concert singer and vocal teacher and is considered one of the most important Puerto Rican tenors and as a representative of the Italian Belcanto singing school. He lived in Puerto Rico, New York City and most recently in Wuppertal in Germany.

education

Zayas began his musical education at the University of Puerto Rico and continued this first at the Puerto Rico Conservatory with Maria Esther Robles and later with Patricia McCafrey and Beverley Peck Johnson of the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He emerged as a finalist from the Metropolitan Opera Competition in 1994 and the Angelica Catalani Competition in Italy. He was then invited to concerts all over Italy. He was a scholarship holder at the University of Music in Vienna and a member of the opera studio there. He was also taught by well-known representatives of bel canto , such as Renata Scotto .

Opera

From an early age, Zayas appeared on stage as a member of the Teatro de la Ópera and the Opera de Puerto Rico as Beppo in Pagliacci , in several performances with Plácido Domingo and Mirella Freni , as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia as partner of Cecilia Bartoli as Ramiro in La Cenerentola , as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Sumi Jo , as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni , as Ferrando in Così fan tutte , as Naraboth in Salome with Julia Migenes-Johnson and Leonie Rysanek and as Cassio in Otello again with Plácido Domingo and Mirella Freni.

Subsequently, Edgardo Zayas was engaged in many opera houses in the USA, Central and South America as well as in Europe, especially for the lyric and coloratura bel canto repertoire.

Among other things, he was engaged as Alfredo in La traviata and Rodolfo in La Bohème for three seasons at the New York City Opera on Tour and as Cassio in Otello at the Washington Opera and the Palm Beach Opera. In Thessaloniki and Athens he sang Rodolfo in La Bohème . At the Bregenz Festival in Austria he played the role of Alfredo in La traviata in five performances .

From 2001 to 2005 he was a member of the ensemble of the Wuppertaler Bühnen , where he played roles such as Ramiro in La Cenerentola , Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia , Ferrando in Così fan tutte , Conte di Libenskof and Cavalier Belfiore in Il viaggio a Reims , Bazzotto in Il buon marito, Don Narciso in Il turco in Italia , the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto , Alfred in der Fledermaus and the title role in Werther .

Then he made a guest appearance. a. in 2006 as Alain in the German premiere of Grisélidis at Theater Lübeck and as Werther in Werther at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin, or in 2012 as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at Theater Ulm and Theater Dortmund .

concert

In the concert field, Edgardo Zayas has appeared in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and Gioachino Rossini's Stabat Mater with the Orquesta Nacional de Costa Rica. He also sang in Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and the USA , as well as in Mozart's Requiem and his Mass in C minor . With Giuseppes Verdi's Messa da Requiem he could be heard in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, the USA and in Bucharest, Romania. In the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra he could be heard in Gioachino Rossini's Miserere .

Singing teacher

As a singing teacher, Edgardo Zayas was a sought-after teacher. In his teaching, which he cultivated with great passion, he taught his students the technique and style of Belcanto through intensive work. He has taught courses at the Interamerican University San Gemán in Puerto Rico, at The Israel Vocal Art Institute in Tel Aviv and as a lecturer in the opera workshop at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico.
