Jean Pierre Edmond Jurien de La Gravière (born November 19, 1812 in Brest , Département Finistère , † March 5, 1892 in Paris ) was an officer in the French Navy , most recently an admiral and a well-known author on military history.

Jurien de La Gravière was the son of Rear Admiral Pierre Roch Jurien de La Gravière and entered the French Navy in 1828. In 1837 he received his lieutenant's license, was initially appointed adjutant to Rear Admiral Julien Pierre Anne Lalande and in 1841 was appointed frigate captain. In 1847 he took command of the corvette Bayonnaise and embarked on a trip to the Far East with the ship for three years. He visited Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Carolines, the Mariana Islands, Batavia, and Macau. To do this, he collected a considerable amount of hydrographic information about the China Sea. In 1853 he became rear admiral and from 1854 took part in the Crimean War , including the bombings of Sevastopol and Kerch. In 1859 he participated in the blockade of Venice in the Sardinian War . From 1861 to 1863 he took command of the Navy Department in the Gulf of Mexico and initially directed all of France's military operations in Mexico. In 1862 he became vice admiral, in the same year he carried out the attack on the Mexican city of Tampico . In 1863 he became a member of the Admiralty Council, in 1866 a member of the Académie des Sciences . From 1868 he was given command of the French Mediterranean fleet , which he also held during the Franco-German War in 1870/71. In 1871 he was appointed director of the map depot of the French Ministry of the Navy. He worked on various commissions. In 1886 he became president of the Académie des Sciences .

His tireless activity in the field of military maritime history was honored in 1888 with a seat ( armchair 6 ) in the Académie française .
