Edmund Höd (* around 1837 in Vienna ; † March 1888 there ) was an Austrian landscape painter .

life and work

The son of a Viennese magistrate's councilor, after completing secondary school and secondary school, entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the age of 15 , where he studied painting (elementary school) and landscape painting from the winter semester 1851/52 to the summer semester 1854, which he took after 6 semesters graduated as an academic painter . Since in his certificate, issued on July 20, 1854, certain doubts about a successful professional activity as a painter were recorded, Höd began his artistic career in 1855 with simple nature studies (rocks, forest floors, streams, ...), only from 1859 (Waldbachstrub near Hallstatt ) paintings are tangible in a more extensive representation.

Edmund Höd was active as a painter in Austria , Bavaria and South Tyrol until 1888. His oil paintings , which often fascinate with their attention to detail and faithful reproduction of nature, are now being auctioned at numerous auctions . Edmund Höd's pictures can also be purchased on art prints or as hand-painted copies.

Although Edmund Höd was already published by H. Fuchs, Die österr. Maler des 19. Jahrhundert 3, 1973, Erg.Bd. 2, 1979 received a short description (with image information and example image) and is listed in numerous galleries , art and auction houses , biographical data of the artist is missing in the literature, but in some cases they can be found on the basis of the documents in the university archive of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and contemporary Newspaper reports can be reconstructed. Based on a preliminary catalog raisonné, compiled according to auction results and references to pictures in private ownership, a reference to Upper Austria is noticeable in his early works. This is also supported by the fact that he was registered in Bad Ischl in 1855 as a painter coming from Vienna.

In the 1860s, numerous landscapes followed, also with figural staffage , and Höd's travels soon took him to Salzburg in the Flachgau , Tennengau and Pinzgau regions , where he developed a special relationship, in particular with the idyllic market town of Zell am See . In the years from 1861 to 1885, at least twelve oil paintings were created here ; the pictures are also considered to be of particular historical value due to the depiction of the townscape before and after the construction of the Salzburg-Tyrolean railway in 1875. Edmund Höd's sphere of activity subsequently extended alongside Salzburg, Upper and Lower Austria to Bavaria as well as North and South Tyrol , a picture (1883) is even said to depict a motif on the Elbe .

In 1869 Höd was imprisoned in Suben prison for counterfeiting banknotes ; there he created a large oil painting that showed Tyrolean farmers wrestling. In 1872 he was released from prison. Edmund Höd died in Vienna in March 1888.

A street in the Schüttdorf district of Zell am See is named after Edmund Höd ; his view of the market from 1872 was used as the cover of the Zeller Chronik.
