Life

After finishing school, Wilkens studied German , history and philosophy at the University of Freiburg and the University of Münster . In order to finance his studies, he worked as a factory and construction worker during this time and gained fruitful experience for his later writing. From 1956 to 1988 he worked as a teacher at the Varel secondary school.

In addition to his school service, Wilkens wrote books, mostly in Low German. His work also includes radio plays for NDR and Radio Bremen as well as essays , articles and lectures. For a while he was also a freelancer for the Nordwest-Zeitung in Oldenburg , for which he wrote glosses, among other things. With his sonorous bass voice, he was also a popular performer and speaker on the radio. Through his choice of topics, he showed that the Low German language is not antiquated, but can provide answers to contemporary problems.
