Edu , real name Eduardo César Daude Gaspar (born May 15, 1978 in São Paulo ), is a former Brazilian soccer player .
Career
Edu started his football career with the Brazilian top club Corinthians São Paulo . He played in the club's youth team until he was called up to the men's professional team in 1998 and played his first game in the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol . During his time at Corinthians he was twice champion (1998, 1999) and once FIFA club world champion ( 2000 ).
Two years later, Edu's talent was also noticed in Europe; on January 16, 2001 he signed a contract with the English Premier League club Arsenal . The transfer was actually supposed to take place in the summer of 2000, but problems arose when it was discovered that Edu's Portuguese passport was forged. With the help of his father, who has Italian roots, Edu got an Italian passport and was able to switch to Arsenal for around € 9 million. In his private life, he suffered a fate when his sister was killed in a traffic accident.
On his debut for Arsenal - 0-0 against Leicester City - he was injured so that he could only play five league games this season. He was also not considered for the Brazilian squad for the 2002 World Cup. After the injury had healed, he played through the following two seasons. The 2003/04 season was his best season for Arsenal, he played a total of 30 league games (2 goals) and became English champions with Arsenal without a single defeat. The subsequent 2004/05 season he was not quite as successful, he missed the preparation for the season by the Copa America and played a total of only 3 league games over the full season.
In July 2005 Edu moved to the Spanish first division club Valencia CF on a free transfer after initial contractual disagreements . He signed a contract until 2010. Even before the season started, Edu injured himself while training, so that he could not make his debut against FC Cádiz until April 4 . For the 2006/07 season , Edu was a regular at Valencia until matchday 11, when a cruciate ligament ruptured him again . He made his comeback a good year later on match day 13 against Racing Santander . In that season he was mostly only a substitute, which did not change in the 2008/09 season . For the 2009/10 season he moved back to his hometown club Corinthians São Paulo . In 2011 Edu ended his active career.
Immediately afterwards, Edu started working as a manager for Corinthians. He later moved to the national association CBF . For this he worked as a technical coordinator. Due to his successful collaboration with national coach Tite , the CBF announced in July 2018 that it would be extending the contract by four years until the 2022 World Cup .
