Several works prove studies in the Hessian Schwalm and in the vicinity of the Willingshausen painters' colony such as the lithograph Zwei Schwälmerinnen from 1860. With a pronounced power of observation and after intensive studies, he mainly devoted himself to depictions of horses, such as the 2nd Hessian Hussar Regiment in the battle at Gundershoffen in 1870 or the officers of the Hessian Garde du Corps , but also portraits, small-format and popular scenes, also these mostly with depictions of horses. In 1869 he created an altarpiece for the nuns' church in Fulda , The Rose Miracle of Saint Elisabeth . The artist presented his work in Kassel ( haymaking at Gewitter 1874, purchase of the art association), but also in Berlin ( The good old days 1872). His last picture showed a vividly painted obstacle race (1883). An estate exhibition of his works took place in Kassel in spring 1883. The city's art association honored him posthumously in 1924 on the occasion of his 100th birthday with a memorial exhibition.
