Eduard Mautner (born November 13, 1824 in Pest , † July 2, 1889 in Baden (Lower Austria) ) was an Austrian journalist, translator, theater critic and writer (poetry, comedies).

Live and act

Mautner was the son of a businessman. After the death of his father, he moved to Vienna with his mother and attended grammar school. He studied philosophy, law and medicine in Prague from 1843 and then in Vienna and philosophy at the University of Leipzig from 1844 , but turned to writing and journalism there. In Prague he had connections to Moritz Hartmann and Alfred Meißner , who shaped him. From 1847 he was back in Vienna, accompanied the revolution of 1848 as a journalist and was a theater critic and feature editor for various daily newspapers. In 1853/54 he made a trip to Germany, Belgium, France and England, for which he published travel sketches.

He was also a playwright and had success in 1851 with his prize game , which was performed at the kk Hof-Burgtheater (it won second place in a comedy competition advertised by the Hof-Burgtheater). In his piece Églantine , also played in Germany, Charlotte Wolter (1834–1897) celebrated successes in 1865 . He also translated French and English poetry, including the poem The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe .

From 1855 to 1864 he was employed by the general management of the French state railways in Vienna. From 1865 he was employed as an assistant at the Vienna Court Library and then an official in the literary office of the Vienna Foreign Ministry .

In order to alleviate his heart condition ( pericarditis ), which had existed for years , Mautner moved to Baden near Vienna about four weeks before his death . On July 2, 1889, he died of a lung attack in the house at Braitnerstrasse 10 ; he was buried to rest on July 4, 1889 in the city cemetery of Baden.
