Eduard Pape (painter)
Eduard Friedrich Pape (born February 28, 1817 in Berlin ; † April 15, 1905 there ) was a German theater , decoration and landscape painter .
Life
Pape was the son of the porcelain painter Friedrich Pape. From 1839 to 1843 he studied landscape painting under Carl Blechen and Wilhelm Schirmer at the Berlin Academy . He earned his living in the studio of the theater and decorative painter Johann Gerst , who also trained him as a decorative painter. In 1845 Pape made a study trip to Tyrol , Switzerland and Italy . From 1849 to 1853 he participated in the painting of the New Museum in Berlin, mainly with reconstructions of ancient architecture according to Friedrich August Stüler's specifications in the Greek and Roman Hall. For his services, Eduard Pape was appointed royal professor in 1853 and a member of the Berlin Academy. In 1857 a serious illness led to a lengthy break from work.
Pape was married to Dorothee Wilhelmine Schultz . From this marriage comes the future lieutenant general and in 1913 Max von Pape (1851–1926), who was raised to the Prussian nobility .
In old age he suffered from a severe eye ailment and was almost blind towards the end of his life.
Eduard Pape died after a brief illness on April 15, 1905 at the age of 88 in Berlin. The funeral took place on April 18th. His grave was in one of the cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor . It is not known exactly which one.
