Edward Joseph Freiherr von Beschi (* 13. March 1848 in Hungarian Ostra ; † 26. April 1916 in Vienna ) was an Austrian imperial officer ( Feldzeugmeister ) Italian-Hungarian descent, head of the fortress artillery in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces and holds the Field Artillery Regiment No. 2 as well as natural scientists .

biography

After successfully completing the Artillery Academy in Mährisch-Weißkirchen , he was assigned to the 4th Fortress Artillery Battalion as a lieutenant on September 1, 1869, but a short time later he was stationed in the Silesian Field Artillery Regiment No. 9 in Vienna, which he did with a visit to the kuk Technical Military Academy . After successfully completing his studies, he was promoted to first lieutenant in the 10th Fortress Artillery Battalion on October 29, 1873, during which he frequented the Technical University in Vienna, then promoted to captain 1st class on November 1, 1877. While Beschi was busy manufacturing new shooting equipment for the field artillery (later introduced as the Model 75) in Vienna, as a captain he was involved in the development, construction and delivery of siege artillery (model 1880) and the large artillery pieces of the coastal artillery, which led him to numerous trips, even to Sweden. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the crown of Emperor Franz Josef I and for his 40 years of outstanding service, he was awarded the Commandant's Cross of the Order of Leopold on August 12, 1908. As a result, he applied for the (tax-free) title of baron for himself and his family. By the highest resolution of October 26th, 1909 and diploma of November 30th, 1909 in Vienna, the elevation to the gentry's class took place. In the meantime, Beschi had been honored on April 26, 1909 with the title and character of Feldzeugmeister.

On one of his business trips he met his future wife Walburga (Wally) Salbach (1856-1896), who married on January 11, 1883 in Berlin and had three children with her: Margareta Maria, Edith and Hans Eduard, who died during the First World War as a young lieutenant in Russian captivity ( Tobolsk ). While he was in command of the fortress artillery regiment in Comoros, his wife fell ill and only died at the age of 40, within a short time, leaving behind the widower with three underage children.

After his retirement (November 1, 1909) he lived in the house inherited from his father in the 1st district of Vienna (Heinrichgasse 4). He was buried in the Dobling cemetery .
