The Education City Stadium (also known as Qatar Foundation stage is known) is a football stadium in the Qatari city of ar-Rayyan . The sports facility is only twelve kilometers from the center of the capital Doha . The facility is to offer 40,000 seats and is planned as one of the venues for the soccer world championship in 2022 . The nickname Jewel of the Desert ( German  jewel of the desert ) refers to the facade of the building, which is reminiscent of a cut diamond .

history

Education City Stadium is located in the western part of Education City's southern campus . Education City on the outskirts of Doha is an initiative of the private Qatar Foundation and comprises 14 square kilometers of educational facilities from school to research and branches of some of the world's most important universities . After the World Cup, the stadium will be reduced to 20,000 seats for university sports. In addition, it will be the venue for the Qatari national soccer team . The 20,000 remaining seats are to be donated to developing countries . 1,600 parking spaces will be available around the stadium.

With 20 percent of its building materials rated as environmentally friendly, Education City Stadium is one of the most environmentally friendly stadiums in the world. 55 percent of the materials come from local sources. In May 2019 received the five-star rating of the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS, German  Global Sustainability Assessment System ). It was the first stadium in the world to receive this award.

The opening was planned for December 2019 as part of the FIFA Club World Cup . At the tournament, the second semi-final with the Champions League winners Liverpool FC , the game for third place and the final in the stadium were planned. At the beginning of December, the games of the Club World Cup in the Education City Stadium had to be canceled because the stadium will not be ready in time. The Khalifa International Stadium in Doha will be used as a replacement venue.

At the beginning of June 2020, the Supreme Council for Organization and Sustainability announced the completion of the World Cup stadium with the Qatar Foundation. After the remodeled Khalifa International Stadium and the new al-Janoub Stadium , it is the third completed venue for the 2022 World Cup. The Education City Stadium was opened on June 15 of that year with a live program showing the commitment of the workers and Craftsmen celebrating during the COVID-19 pandemic , opened virtually.
