Gustav Edvard Westman , even Edouard Westman (* 16th May 1865 in Gävle , Sweden ; † 23. September 1917 in Kapellskär in Norrtälje , Sweden) was a Swedish landscape and marine painter and graphic artist . He is one of the Skagen painters .

Life

Westman, one of six children of the wholesaler Johan Ludvig Westman (1819-1893) and his wife Emma Elisabeth, née Holmström (1838-1911), studied art at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm . In the years 1882/1883 he was a private student of Oscar Törnå . He then went to Düsseldorf , where he studied from 1883 to 1885 at the Royal Prussian Art Academy with Heinrich Lauenstein . After he had stayed in Paris for a while , he went to Finland , where he settled in Turku as a painter and worked as a teacher at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Association in 1893/1894 and 1896. Together with Victor Westerholm , who also taught at this drawing school, Westman visited Lemland and Önningeby near Jomala on Åland , where an artists' colony had been formed since 1886 . From 1888 both of them visited the Danish artists' colony in Skagen . One of his work was given an honorable mention at the Exposition Universelle in 1889.
