Sir Edward Chichester, 9th Baronet CB , CMG (born November 20, 1849 - September 17, 1906 in Gibraltar ) was a British nobleman and admiral .

Origin and career as a naval officer

Edward Chichester came from the family Chichester , an old family of the gentry of Devon . He was the eldest son of Arthur Chichester, 8th Baronet and his wife Mary Nicholetts . At thirteen he joined the Royal Navy as a cadet and was promoted to lieutenant in 1870. In 1881 he took part in the First Boer War and in 1882 in the occupation of Egypt . From 1884 to 1885 he served during the fighting in Egypt . In 1889 he was promoted to captain . From 1899 to 1901 he managed sea transports to South Africa during the Second Boer War and was mentioned in dispatches . For his services he was awarded the Order of the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1899 and the Order of the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1900 . From 1899 to 1901 he had the position of aide-de-camp with Queen Victoria , after her death until 1902 in the same position with King Edward VII. In 1902 he was promoted to Rear Admiral. From 1904 until his death he served as the commander of the British naval station in Gibraltar .

After his father's death in July 1898, he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Raleigh in the County of Devon and his land holdings, including Youlston Park at Barnstaple . After his death, his body was transferred to Great Britain and buried in Sherwill near Barnstaple.

Family and offspring

Chichester had married Emma Whyte , daughter of Naval Officer Robert Charles Whyte , on October 12, 1880 . With her he had four sons and six daughters, including:

  • Edward George Chichester, 10th Baronet (1883–1940)
  • Arthur Whyte Chichester (1885-1951)
  • Victoria May Chichester (1887–1968) ⚭ Gilbert Wills, 1st Baron Dulverton
  • Edith Mary Chichester (1891–1976) ⚭ Sir Charles Stephen Bine Renshaw, 2nd Bt.

After his death, his eldest son Edward Chichester inherited his title.
