Edward Duyker (born March 21, 1955 in Melbourne ) is an Australian writer and historian who explores the role of the French and Dutch sailors during the discovery of Australia .

Life

Edward Duyker is the son of the Dutchman Herman Duyker and the Mauritian Marie-Thérèse Maryse Commins, whose ancestors come from Cornwall . In 1849 some of them emigrated to Adelaide , South Australia. He is also related to the Australian landscape painter , Lloyd Rees.

Duyker studied history and English literature at La Trobe University and Melbourne University , where he received his PhD in 1981. From 1981 to 1983 he was an intelligence officer (Joint Intelligence Organization) in Canberra. Edward Duyker is a lecturer at the University of Sydney and was an honorary professor at the Australian Catholic University (2009–2018). Most of his textbooks try to revise the Anglocentrism of Australian history. His books reveal much about the French navy's voyages in both the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Among his books are the biographies of Daniel Solander , Jacques Julien Houtou de Labillardière , François Péron and Jules Dumont d'Urville .

Duyker dedicated a chapter in his biography of François Péron to the French siege of Landau, Palatinate, in 1793, the French occupation of cities such as Dudenhofen and Hochspeyer and François Péron's captivity in Magdeburg in 1794/95.
