Edward North, 1st Baron North

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edward North, 1st Baron North (* around 1496 in Walkeringham , † December 31, 1564 in London ) was an English politician of the Tudor period.

Origin, family environment and upbringing

Edward North did not come from a noble family, but from the bourgeois merchant class. His father was the London merchant Roger North and his mother was Christiane Warcup, who was also a bourgeois. He was born in Walkeringham, Nottinghamshire , around 1496 . Their parents gave their only son a careful upbringing. He first attended St Paul's School in London, then the University of Cambridge to study law there.

Professional career

After completing his studies, he entered the service of the City of London as a secretary, after which he was Secretary of Parliament from 1531 to 1540. He had held the post of royal sergeant of law since 1536. Other legal offices were Treasurer of the Court of Augmentation in 1540, then his Chancellor from 1544 to 1548 and finally Privy Councilor from 1546 to 1553. He enjoyed the full trust of Henry VIII , whom he together with after the resignation of Lord Chancellor Thomas Lord Audley Sir Thomas Pope brought the Great Seal .

In 1533 he bought the manor house and estate of Kirtling in Cambridgeshire and rose so in Landed Gentry of that county. From 1540 to 1543 he was sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire . In 1542 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor and elected to the English Parliament as Knight of the Shire for Cambridgeshire . As such he was a member of the House of Commons 1542-1544, 1547-1552 and 1553 . In 1559 he was Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire under Elizabeth I.

Lord North and Queen Mary I.

Edward North was among the members of the Privy Council who wrote to Princess Mary on July 9, 1553 that they would recognize Jane Gray as the future queen. Amazingly, after her accession to the throne, Mary did not add that to Edward North. This appointed him on February 17, 1554 by Writ of Summons in the House of Lords and raised him to hereditary Baron North . He then belonged to the escort that accompanied King Philip II of Spain to the wedding with Mary of Southampton in Winchester . When Cardinal Reginald Pole was received in November 1554, he carried the sword before the king.

Edward North died in London on December 31, 1564 and was buried in Kirtling. His son Roger North inherited him as 2nd Baron North.
