Edward Paul Wellen (born October 2, 1919 in New Rochelle , New York ; died January 15, 2011 there ) was an American writer, best known as a writer of science fiction and crime stories .

Life

Wellen's father, Hyman Levy, was a tailor, and his mother, Lillian, née Harris, was an office worker. Due to a mistake in the immigration procedure, Wellen's mother had been given the name Welinsky, which she shortened to Wellen. After the divorce from her husband, she took this name again, which her son also received. After high school, Wellen worked as a dispatcher for a heating oil company from 1939 to 1942. During World War II he was a member of the US Army's Chemical Warfare Service and was deployed in North Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe. After the war he briefly studied at Shrivenham American University , a study facility for disabled soldiers in Shrivenham, Berkshire . He then became a stamp dealer and also worked in the advertising industry. From 1951 to 1953 he studied again at the City University of New York .

After Wellen had published Origins of Galactic Slang in 1952 - a bogus treatise on the roots of galactic slang, which he had a whole series of articles following the same pattern - in the SF magazine Galaxy Science Fiction , he became a full-time writer. More SF short stories followed in Galaxy SF , The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction , Infinity Science Fiction, and other SF magazines. From 1958 on, Wellen also began writing detective stories, the majority of which appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine . In the following four decades, Wellen wrote around 75 science fiction and over 100 detective stories. As is often the case with authors whose works appeared almost exclusively in magazines, Wellen was largely forgotten after his writing activity ended. A collection of his detective stories was published in 2001 and two volumes of SF stories in 2015. A good dozen of his stories have appeared in German translation in various anthologies.

In 1960, Wellen's story served as a template for an episode of the New Orleans television series , Bourbon Street . His television script The Hubert Otis won first prize at the Birmingham Festival of the Arts in 1964.

In 2011, Wellen died at the age of 91.
