Edwin C. Constable (* 1955 in Edinburgh ) is a British chemist and professor.

Life

1974 Constable chemistry at started St. Catherine's College of the University of Oxford to study, where he earned his BA in 1978 in chemistry. It was in 1980 at Linacre College of the same university - supervised by Kenneth Seddon - PhD . During this time he became interested in ruthenium chemistry and photochemistry . He was a post-doctoral student at the University of Cambridge , where he became a University Lecturer and Fellow of Robinson College in 1984 . He stayed in Cambridge until 1993 when he became a full professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Basel . In the meantime he was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham from 2000 to 2002 , but then returned to the University of Basel. In 2007 he became dean of research at the Faculty of Science and in 2011 he was vice-rector for research and the promotion of young talent.

He deals with complex chemistry , recently a. a. Transition metal complexes with poly- pyridine ligands, their assembly and functionalization, for example with photosensitive components, with water splitting inspired by nature (photosynthesis) in monolayers of poly-oxo metal clusters and photosensitive ruthenium complexes, development of complex compounds for light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEC) and of dyes for dye-sensitive solar cells (DSC).

Constable is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of the American Chemical Society . He is on the editorial board of numerous journals including Chemical Communications , Chemical Reviews , Chemical Society Reviews , Coordination Chemistry Reviews , New Journal of Chemistry , Polyhedron, and Supramolecular Chemistry .

He is married to the chemist Catherine Housecroft (* 1955), who is also a professor in Basel and works with him in a research group.
