Edwin James

Edwin P. James (born August 27, 1797 in Weybridge , Vermont , † October 28, 1861 in Burlington , Iowa ) was an American botanist , geologist , military doctor , non-fiction author and Bible translator . Its botanical author abbreviation is " E. James ".

Live and act

In 1820 James was a member of Stephen Harriman Long's expedition , where he managed the first ascent of Pikes Peak in Colorado. James was the first botanist to study the flora of the Rocky Mountains. From 1823 to 1833 he served as a surgeon in the US Army . From 1833 to 1836 he was editor of the Temperance Herald and Journal in Albany (New York) . He learned Indian languages ​​and translated the New Testament into the language of the Ojibwe . In 1833 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
