Edwin Oetiker (born August 1, 1887 in Embrach , Canton of Zurich ; † September 27, 1952 in Zurich ) was a Swiss engineer , inventor and manufacturer of engine brakes .

career path

After completing an apprenticeship as a mechanic, Oetiker trained as a mechanical engineer at the Technikum Winterthur . He then headed his uncle's Fischer-Wagen automobile factory . On April 9, 1914, he had a “ change gear for motor vehicles” patented (patent from the Federal Office for Intellectual Property “No. 70223”). After he 1917 Engineering - diploma at the Polytechnic in Zurich received, he worked in the aircraft industry .

In 1923, Oetiker acquired the Arbenz motor vehicle factory in Albisrieden from the liquidation assets . From 1924 to 1934 he manufactured trucks according to his own plans . In 1925 Oetiker applied for a patent for an “ exhaust ram pressure engine brake ” for diesel and gasoline engines . This found numerous licensees in the Swiss and worldwide truck production . From 1929 he built trucks and chassis for autocars with Maybach engines .

In 1934, Oetiker stopped manufacturing vehicles and concentrated on further developing the engine brake. In 1952 he was still designing an engine brake with a throttle valve , which required much less space than his previously patented designs with a gate valve.

Companies

The former Arbenz Motorwagenfabrik operated as Oetiker & Co. Arbenzlastwagenfabrik until around 1933 and then as Oetiker & Co. Motorwagenfabrik, Zurich-Albisrieden . She had a company health insurance fund . and initially employed 37 and later a maximum of 100 workers. From around 1940 to the 1950s, the company can be identified as Oetiker Motorbremsen AG .

family

Oetiker's parents were the master carpenter Johann Oetiker Anna b. Weidmann. In 1919 he married Elsa Mathilde, daughter of Ernst Lacher. - The architect Heinrich Oetiker (born November 27, 1886 in Embrach; † August 8, 1968 in Zurich), the son of the carpenter of the same name, is also entitled to live in Embrach. He was the senior site manager of the 1939 National Exhibition ("Landi 39") and shaped the structural development of the city of Zurich.
