Edwin Schmidt (born November 24, 1904 in Neu-Ulm , † July 15, 1988 in Plauen ) was a German teacher and local researcher .

Life

He came from Neu-Ulm and grew up in the Saxon state capital Dresden . He attended the teachers ' seminar in Bischofswerda and then a pedagogical university education in Dresden. He found his first job as a teacher in Kipsdorf in the Eastern Ore Mountains . However, he only stayed there for a short time and took on a new teaching position in Saalig in February 1935 . Since his wife came from Vogtland , he soon found great liking in this area and began to research its history. One of his first works was the local history of Saalig, which he put together.

In 1943 Edwin Schmidt was called up for military service. He was taken prisoner by the English, from which he did not return until 1948. Since he worked as a teacher under National Socialism, he first had to work for some time in an industrial company and was only able to return to his old profession in 1953. Edwin Schmidt initially worked in Tirpersdorf and moved to the district town of Oelsnitz / Vogtl in 1954 .

He took early retirement in 1962 due to a worsening bone condition. As a positive side effect, he had more time for his local history research on the Vogtland. His most important publications included issue 48 of the Vogtland Museum Plauen's series of publications entitled On the History of Voigtsberg Castle , which appeared in 1982, and the leaflet St. Jakobikirche Oelsnitz iV - From Your History , published by the Evangelical Lutheran Parish Office in Oelsnitz (no year, approx. 1981). He also published in the Sächsische Heimatblätter , in the Vogtland Heimatblätter , in the Kulturbote for the Musikwinkel, in the Kulturspiegel for the Auerbach district, Vogtland as well as in the calendar Sächsische Gebirgsheimat . His contemporaries counted him among the prominent Vogtland researchers.
