Edwin Stephen Goodrich

Edwin Stephen Goodrich (born June 21, 1868 in Weston-super-Mare , † January 6, 1946 in Oxford ) was a British zoologist and paleontologist.

Live and act

Edwin Stephen Goodrich was born in Weston-super-Mare on June 21, 1868. His father died just two weeks after his birth and he was an orphan. His mother moved the family to Pau in the French region of Aquitaine . There Goodrich attended the English school and then a French lycée .

In 1888 Goodrich began studying art at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London . There he met the zoologist Ray Lankester, he got him enthusiastic about zoology . In 1892 Goodrich moved to Oxford and continued his studies at Merton College . That same year, Lankester became Professor of Comparative Anatomy at the University of Oxford on the Linacre Chair of Zoology , making Goodrich his assistant. Goodrich won the Rolleston Memorial Prize in 1894 and graduated with honors in 1895. In 1905 he became a Fellow in the Royal Society .

Goodrich did research mainly on marine animals and made important contributions to the theory of evolution, in particular to the evolution of the head of fish.

In 1913 Goodrich married the protozoologist Helen Pixell (1878-1957), who from then on supported him in his work. his artistic skills and his art studies were later very useful to him and Goodrich became famous for his beautiful and understandable drawings and diagrams. In 1921 Goodrich received the Linacre Chair of Zoology , the chair of his old mentor, which he held until 1945.

Goodrich was awarded the Linnaeus Medal in 1932 and the Royal Medal in 1936 . He became an honorary member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a member of several other science academies and received several honorary doctorates .
