Edwin Werner

Edwin Werner (* 1940 in Breslau ) is a German musicologist and Handel researcher.

Life

Werner comes from Silesia . After graduating from high school in Ballenstedt in the Quedlinburg district , he studied musicology and German at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg from 1959 to 1964 . His academic teachers included a. Max Schneider and Walther Siegmund-Schultze . From 1964 to 1967 he worked as a music dramaturge at the Eisleben Theater.

Then (1967) he became deputy director of the Handel House in Halle (Saale) under Konrad Sasse . In 1981 Bernd Baselt received his doctorate A to become Dr. phil. with the work of Georg Friedrich Handel “Trauer-Anthem” HWV 264. A study with a critical edition of the score as part of the Halle Handel Edition . From 1982 to 2005 he succeeded Sasse as director of the music museum, which he established as an internationally important institution. For the "Bach-Handel-Schütz-Honor of the GDR" he designed the extension of the hand house by three buildings in the 1980s. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he campaigned for the creation of a “Handel Quarter”. Under his rigidity, the first records of Handel music were released, and he himself also appeared as an organist .

Werner edited Sasse's revised dissertation on Robert Franz and the series of writings from the Handel House in Halle , wrote the museum guide and continued the Handel bibliography . He was also a lecturer in instrument science at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He is considered a leading expert in the field of Handel iconography . He made contributions to the Handel Yearbook (2008) and the Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia (2009) and was the author of the authoritative publication Handel portraits in the collections of the Handel House Foundation (2013).

At the Handel Festival in Halle (Saale) he was jointly responsible for the program design. From 1983 to 2011 he was a board member of the international Georg Friedrich Händel Society , which made him an honorary member in 2015. Furthermore, in 1990 he initiated the Friends and Sponsors' Association of the Handel House in Halle eV. He also wrote articles and edited for the association's communications , which he had established in 1991 as Handel in-house communications .

In 1994 Werner co-founded the Standing Conference for Central German Baroque Music, which has meanwhile been renamed Central German Baroque Music in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. He was also a co-founder of the Halle Music Council and from 1990 to 2004 founding president of the State Music Council of Saxony-Anhalt . He later became its honorary president. From 1993 to 1997 he was also chairman of the regional council (conference of regional music councils) in the German music council . From 2003 to 2009 he was a member of the MDR Broadcasting Council and was also a member of the ARD program advisory board.

Werner is married.
