Edzo Toxopeus
Edzo Hendrik Toxopeus (born February 19, 1918 in Amersfoort , province of Utrecht , † August 23, 2009 in Oegstgeest , province of Zuid-Holland ) was a Dutch lawyer and politician of the Partij van de Vrijheid (PvdV) and the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie ( VVD), who was among other things a member of the Second Chamber of the States General , Minister of the Interior and Minister of State .
Life
Studies, professional career and member of parliament
After visiting the Municipal Gymnasium of Breda Toxopeus started in 1936 a degree in Dutch law at Utrecht University , where he graduated in May 1942nd He then worked at a law firm in Breda and then from 1944 to 1945 head of the legal department of the military authority in Breda before he was head of the legal department of the military authority in Utrecht for some time in 1945 . After he worked as a lawyer in a law firm in Breda between 1945 and 1947 , he became an independent lawyer in Breda and practiced this activity until May 1959.
In addition, Toxopeus, who was a board member of the VVD der Bread from 1948 to 1952, began his political career in local politics in September 1949 when he was elected a member of the Netherlands as a candidate for the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie and remained a member until May 1959.
In November 1956 he was also elected for the first time as a member of the Second Chamber of the States General and was a member of it until May 1959. At the same time was both a member of the board of directors of the VVD in the province of Noord-Brabant and of the main board of the party.
Minister, Commissioner of the Queen and Member of the Council of State
On May 19, 1959, Toxopeus was appointed Minister of the Interior by Prime Minister Jan de Quay in his De Quay cabinet and held this office in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Victor Marijnen until April 14, 1965. At the same time he was from August 18, 1959 to on May 1, 1963 in the de Quay cabinet as Minister responsible for affairs of the Netherlands New Guinea .
Between May and July 1963 Toxopeus, who was also the top candidate of his party, was again a member of the Second Chamber and at the same time chairman of the VVD parliamentary group . He was also the political leader of his party between May 1963 and October 1969.
In September 1965 he was again elected as a member of the Second Chamber and was a member of it until November 1969. In addition, he was again chairman of the VVD parliamentary group between March 1966 and October 1969.
He was then from February 1, 1970 to November 1, 1980 Commissioner of the Queen ( Commissaris van de Koningin ) in the province of Gelderland .
On June 20, 1980 he was appointed a member of the Council of State ( Raad van State ) by Queen Beatrix, who had only been in office for almost two months , and belonged to this constitutional body to advise the Dutch government after taking up office on November 1, 1980 until November 1. March 1988.
For his longstanding political services, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau on October 23, 1980 . During this time he was also awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on January 22, 1985.
