The Eendracht ( German  Eintracht , latin Concordia ) was built in 1615 early modern Dutch sailing ship , with Willem Schouten the Cape Horn discovered for Europe.

construction

The Eendracht was a typically Dutch fleece ship with three masts. The mizzen mast was equipped with a latin sail , while three square sails were attached to the fore and main mast. Fleuten had a pronounced stern and bow fort .

history

The Eendracht crew fired at a catamaran

Isaac Le Maire commissioned his son Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelisz Schouten to find a new route around the southern tip of South America to the East Indies , easier to navigate than the dangerous Strait of Magellan , in order to circumvent the trade monopoly of the Dutch East India Company . They sailed with the Eendracht and the smaller Hoorn on June 14, 1615 from Texel . During repair work in Patagonia , the Hoorn accidentally caught fire and the journey was continued with the Eendracht alone. On January 29, 1616, the seafarers sighted and circled Cape Horn . Several islands for Europe were discovered while driving through the Pacific, including the Tonga Islands . On September 17, 1616, they reached Ternate in the Moluccas , where they took a cargo of spices on board.

On the way home, the Dutch East India Company confiscated the ship in Java and sent Schouten and Le Maire as prisoners in the Netherlands, as they were accused of violating the company's trading monopoly. The ship was then used under the name Zuider Eendracht in East Indian waters until it sank in May 1620 near Banten off the west coast of Java.
