Egilbert († May 29, 1146 in Bamberg ) was Patriarch of Aquileja (1129–?) And Bishop of Bamberg (1139–1146).

Life

He became cathedral dean of the chapter of Bamberg in 1120. In 1129 he was appointed patriarch of Aquileja , where he could not stay and returned to Bamberg. After this return he received the provost of St. Gangolf . After the death of Bishop Otto , the cathedral chapter elected him the new bishop in July 1139. He traveled to Rome for episcopal ordination and received it in October 1139 from Pope Innocent II (1130–1143). Innocent also presented him with the pallium . Bishop Egilbert died on May 29, 1146.

Events in the diocese

Under Egilbert, the diocese expanded to include the former Schweinfurt hereditary estates Pottenstein and Rodach near Kronach . Furthermore, the castles Giech and Lichtenfels came to Bamberg. The greatest event during his reign was the canonization of Emperor Henry III shortly before his death . by Pope Eugene III. (1145-1153) March 11, 1146.

Bishop Egilbert is buried together with the Bamberg bishops Eberhard I. , Timo , Wulfing von Stubenberg and Heinrich II. Von Sternberg in a stone coffin, which today stands on the south wall of the crypt under the east choir of Bamberg Cathedral .
