detail

The war memorial in the Nikolaikirche in Stralsund is a war memorial from 1931 that was created by Hans Schwegerle .

monument

In a window niche of the southern tower hall of the Nikolaikirche rests a simple square stone plinth opposite four steps . On it stands a 3.10 meter high bronze sculpture , which was created by Hans Schwegerle ( Munich ). It shows a figure of Christ in the shape of a cross with arms outstretched to the sides. The head is leaning back and pointing up with closed eyes. The hands form bowls.

On both sides of the sculpture there are bronze plaques with the names of those who fell in the world war. To the left of the steps was the year 1914, to the right 1918. After the Second World War , 1914 was replaced by 1914–1918 and 1918 by 1939–1945 .

Years earlier, when Lübeck's Marienkirche was looking for designs for its “Memorial of the Fallen” through an invitation to tender, Schwegerle submitted a draft that looked very similar to this memorial.

history

The monument was the Sunday before Thanksgiving of 1931 in memory of the First World War fallen inaugurated the community. The consecration of the memorial chapel and the memorial took place in the presence of the church council and board of directors , representatives of the neighboring communities and the St. Marienkirche in Lübeck , as well as the artist himself. When the organ was installed, the flags of the Stralsund war clubs were carried through the nave to the altar, on the sides of which they were placed. Superintendent Schumacher gave the consecration sermon on Joh 20, 19-21. This specifically addressed the message of the statue and its physical posture. After the sermon, the congregation gathered in front of the chapel. The flags of the clubs and the delegation of the ship's trunk division took up position on both sides of the still veiled chapel and while the envelope fell, the flags were lowered. The statue was circled to the muffled sounds of the organ and wreaths were then placed at its feet.
