The performed compositions are assessed in several dozen individual and group categories. In the evening, the participating clubs playfully roam the streets of the venue. Top formations from Germany and abroad appear in an accompanying show program for the audience. At the end, the participants present themselves in a large parade. The Federal Festival takes place every four years. In addition to the major federal event, regional drum and whistle festivals take place in Switzerland, for example the central Swiss drum and whistle festival , the Upper Valais drum and whistle festival or the Fête romande des Tambours et Fifres .

In the competition in 2010 around 1000 individual players and almost 4000 section participants competed in over 40 lecture rooms. Tens of thousands of visitors saw the large parade, in which around 3500 musicians in colorful uniforms with over 100 formations took part.

In 2014, around 3,000 drum, piccolo, Natärisch and Clairon players from all over Switzerland competed in their disciplines at the federal level for three days. In addition, a varied supporting program with a move was offered.

Tambours and pipers are the origin of Swiss military music . Today, drums and pipes are played as instruments of folk music in many secular customs and church events in Switzerland. The STPV was founded in 1906 as the Swiss military drum association in Aarau . In 1916 it was renamed the Schweizerischer Tambourenverband , in 2006 it was given the name Schweizerischer Tambouren- und Pfeiferverband . Until the beginning of the Second World War, the drum festivals of the STPV were preceded by the term Swiss , and since 1946 federal .

For the 25th anniversary in 2010, Swiss Post issued a special stamp designed by the Bern graphic studio Müller Lütholf with a face value of 1 Swiss franc with the motif of the Federal Drum and Piper Festival, part of a set of four on the subject of customs.
