Eikplast II is a sailing dinghy that was designed as an open, slup-rigged dinghy for recreational and hiking sports. Their equipment and rigging allow convenient and problem-free operation and handling. The dinghy was designed for sailing at 3 to 4 Bft. The maximum sail area upwind is 8.4 m², which can be optimally adapted to the prevailing wind conditions with the inclusion of the traveler on the cockpit floor . Two long and two shortened battens made of plywood are incorporated into the mainsail in order to expose the leech and to enable an optimized sail profile.

In order to always sail the dinghy upright and to trim it optimally through weight trimming, there are riding straps and tiller extensions for the helmsman and the crew . The rig ( mast and boom ) are made of seawater-resistant aluminum as a hollow profile. The traps are protected inside the mast. Forestay and steel shrouds can be adjusted using classic shrouds . The mast holder and lock allows an uncomplicated laying of the mast. Different rudder blade shapes were used over the entire construction period, but they all have in common that they are made of ash plywood and can be caught up. The folding sword , however, is made of aluminum.

The predecessor of Eikplast II is the Eikplast I .

Ship construction or manufacturing

The Eikplast II dinghies were built by the "Eikboom shipyard" in Rostock until the early 1990s. The hull is made of glass fiber reinforced polyester resin using the hand lay-up process. A protective, colored gelcoat layer is applied to protect the laminate . The two main sections - the deck with cockpit and the boat hull - are screwed and glued together. Reinforcements are incorporated in the floor area, under the treads and on highly stressed components as well as under the fittings. Two bulkheads , lockable with wooden hatches , divide the boat into three compartments. The Eikplast II is unsinkable due to additional buoyancy devices (foam polystyrene) in the floor area and below the deck. Due to the solid construction, the hulls are very durable, which is also reflected in the large number of boats still in existence.

Regatta and races

Even if the Eikplast II was a former national unit class of the GDR, today hardly any such boats are used for regattas . This is due on the one hand to the lack of a class association and on the other hand to the Spartan fittings. The German Sailing Association (DSV) currently has Eikplast II dinghies with a yardstick of 120 (when using the jib 3.15 m²). The genoa (4.15 m²) that was optionally available at the time leads to a yardstick of 119.
