To give away a girl is a German silent film love comedy from 1913 with Ernst Reicher and Thea Sandten in the leading roles.

action

One day, with a heavy heart, a mother gives away her little child to three wealthy young men because she does not have the means to give the little one a suitable education. Therefore the young men should take care of them. The little girl soon matures into a pretty young lady, and this fact has not yet driven a wedge between the three bachelors who are friends. When the old educator, who had been by their side up to now, dies, the men don't really know how to go on with the young lady left in their hands. The solution is quite simple: a suitable husband for her has to be found!

But now suddenly each of the three thinks that he is probably the best for this role, especially since all three friends have fallen in love with the girl over the years. But since bigamy is now forbidden, another decision has to be made, and so it is decided to leave it to the ward itself as to whom she intends to marry. The young lady decides as follows: she wants to marry the person who will give her the best birthday present. One of them rushes into expense and buys her jewelry, the other purchases a beautiful painting for her. The third, however, shoots the bird: he brings the mother, who is now aged, up and brings daughter and sire back together. And so he can also free the little one. Both friends admit defeat and wish the couple all the best and good luck.

Production notes

To give away a girl was made in mid-1913 in Berlin's Komet-Film-Atelier at Müllerstrasse 182, at the corner of Sellerstrasse, and had two files. The film passed the censorship in July 1913, was banned from young people and premiered as the opening film on September 12, 1913 at the BTL in Potsdamerstrasse.

Henny Porten spoke the prologue . The film was made just before Ernst Reiser's career as a silent film series detective Stuart Webbs began.

The basic structure of this story was found in the 1985 French comedy classic Three Men and a Baby .

criticism

"The whole film is developed with a warmth and sensible intimacy and draws its success from this simplicity."
