Pirimse washes her laundry in the open air in the village in which she lives and which is being redesigned, while her son Jotam sits on the lap of the construction worker Alexander and steers a roller with him while building the road . Suddenly Jotam sees his father Sosana in the distance and runs towards him. He works as a shepherd of a herd of cattle in a remote mountain valley and only comes home for a short time every few months. Until Sosana arrives in the village, Pirimse tries to convince Alexander that he will receive her husband together with her, to tell him that the two are now a couple, as they have agreed. However, Alexander avoids it and Pirimse sees no other way out than to try to kill himself at the fence. Sosana, who has meanwhile arrived, can save her.
During a conversation at the state farm chairpersons requires this that Sosana moves his herd to a new farm near the village, as in the occupied valley now greater oil deposits were discovered. Sosana rejects this, however, because there he lives in the land of his fathers, from closeness to nature and its laws. In order to have his wife more under control, he takes her with his boy on the return trip to the valley. Once there, his assistant Giorgi explains to him that he will leave the herd and the valley to look after his parents, possibly to marry, and that he has no more strength for the work. As a substitute for himself, he has already brought the fortune teller Sofia with him.
Sosana is at war with the geologists, because although he has known about the oil for a long time, he does not want strangers in his valley. But he shows his son the caves in the mountains, which were already inhabited thousands of years ago and who knew how to use the oil for themselves. But he shouldn't tell anyone. Since Pirimse is more and more drawn to people, she often stays with the geologists and also complains to the director of her suffering, but he does not want to and cannot help her. When Sosana once again found his wife in the geologists' camp, he beats her up. Back in her hut, both lying in their beds, he confesses his love for her and since she shows no reaction, he rapes her.
One day Sosana is lying in the sun between several haystacks and is sleeping. When Sofia finds him like this, she takes the opportunity to kiss him. This wakes him up and runs after Sofia, who is running away, until he catches her in the river, where they make love to the point of exhaustion. As they lie on the beach, they hear Jotam shouting that he has seen everything and that he will tell his mother. Now Sosana also beats Sofia because he blames her for what happened, only to feel sorry for himself afterwards. The time has now come for Sofia to leave everything.
Pirimse now also finds the courage to tell her husband that he is to blame for all the misfortunes. While he is driving a sick cow to the vet, she and her son leave the dwelling in the valley. When Sosana returns the next day, his herd has made itself independent and has disappeared. Suddenly his assistant Giorgi, who was homesick for his work, shows up and helps him with the search. In order to improve the chances of success, the two separate and call out to each other at regular intervals that they haven't found anything yet.
Production and publication
The black and white film premiered in Moscow in December 1968 under the title Большая зеленая долина . Like all Georgian films , A Great Green Valley was shot in the Georgian language and then dubbed in Russian for the other Soviet republics . The Georgian version was performed in Tbilisi as early as 1967 .
In Germany , the film was shown in 1975 in West Berlin's Arsenal cinema as part of a Georgian film week and on March 24, 1975 on ZDF . No evidence of a performance could be found for the GDR .
A large, green valley runs in Georgian with German subtitles and was digitally restored, secured and made accessible to the public again in 2016 with funds from the Federal Foreign Office's cultural preservation program.
