A train with a double-decker car arrives at the Rostock railway station , manned by tired young conscripts who are supposed to do their military service in the National People's Army . In the barracks of the motorized rifle troops, which bears the name Wilhelm Florin , the soldiers who finish their 18-month conscription on the same day are already busy leaving the newcomers clean cupboards, beds and rooms, which of course from their superiors is checked last time. While the current is reservists say goodbye to their dableibenden roommates, the future soldiers do with armored personnel carriers on their way to the barracks. But before they enter, there is a celebratory farewell to family, friends and acquaintances, for which a military orchestra was requested by the People's Navy and young pioneers present flowers. Normally the new and the old could have met, because they leave the barracks gate at the same time, also received by family and friends.
To become a soldier, you have to look like this first and that starts with taking measurements. It doesn't work without problems for everyone, but there is a uniform for everyone. Then there is a painful part for many - the hairdresser, and the first immediate superiors have also introduced themselves. Then it goes with the clothes, wrapped in a tarpaulin, into the accommodations. The staff sergeant in charge brings four of the conscripts into their future room, where they are introduced to the four soldiers who will serve for another six months or a year, so the target strength has been reached again.
The next morning at six o'clock a call goes through the corridor: "Company end the night's sleep, get up, get ready for morning exercise" and three minutes later it says: "Company step out for morning exercise". After breakfast, each of the newcomers is assigned their own personal weapon for the next 18 months and then the order of the train is practiced, over and over again. This is followed by the first drill exercises and getting to know the regiment's weapons . How do you become a soldier, in 18 months the newly drafted will know. The film stops when duty begins properly.

Production and publication
Convened , the Profile Artistic Working Group shot it as a black and white film. The film premiered on February 11, 1972. A first broadcast on television in the GDR was on October 9, 1972 in the first program.
