The Worst Witch (AKA: The Worst Witch ) is a British Fantasy - children's series of 2017 about witches who are learning on a magical school's spells. The series is funded by ZDF , Netflix and CBBC . The series is based on the book series of the same name by Jill Murphy , which was published between 1974 and 2013. It is the fifth adaptation of the book series after the film The Worst Witch (1986), the television series A Lousy Witch (1998-2002), its sequel Weirdsister College (2001) and the spin-off The New Worst Witch (2005-2006) . Bella Ramsey plays the main role of Mildred Hoppel .

action

The children's series is about the girl Mildred Hoppel (in the original: Mildred Hubble ), who becomes a student of the Graustein-Akademie für Hexen ( Cackle's Academy ) in the first episode . She is the only student from a non-magical house, which is very unusual. She is not a very good student and is afraid of being thrown out of school in the first year. She is always at the center of magical and non-magical mishaps, which she is mostly to blame for, much to the regret of the strict teacher Mrs. Harschmann ( Miss Hardbroom ). However, she always overcomes the challenges with the help of her two best friends Edith Nightshade ( Enid Nightshade ) and Maude Mondschein ( Maud Spellbody ).

In addition to the magical mishaps, Mildred saves the school from Agatha, the evil twin sister of the warm-hearted school principal Ada Graustein ( Miss Cackle ), and her cronies.

season 1

Maude Mondschein crash-lands on Mildred Hoppel's balcony. Mildred, who hadn't known anything about witches until then, flies with Maude to the Graustein Academy because Maude's glasses are broken and she can't see anything. The Graustein Academy is a school palace. Together with Maude and Edith Nightshade, Mildred experiences various magical adventures at the witch's school. Mildred triggered many of them herself because she is not a particularly good student; all classmates come from magical families and have been familiar with magic since they were born. With her clumsiness, Mildred annoys the strict teacher Mrs. Harschmann, who often says "With Mildred Hoppel there are always problems" ("Mildred Hubble always trouble"). Since Mildred is not a particularly good student, she is always on the verge of being kicked out of school.

But not only Mildred causes problems at the Graustein Academy. Graustein, a lovable and warm-hearted woman, has a twin sister named Agatha who is constantly trying to take control of the school. At the end of the first season, Mildred saves the whole school and the evil twin sister is hexed into a picture. Unfortunately, the best student in the school, Esmeralda Edel ( Esmerelda Hallow ), loses her magic powers and has to leave school.

season 2

There are more magical adventures in the second season. Mildred is still not a good witch and is always up to something. Her two best friends are constantly bailing out her.

A new teacher is hired: Ms. Schimmel ( Miss Marigold Mold ). She is always nice and kind and teaches art. At the end of the season it turns out that she was only hired as a teacher to free the evil Agatha. However, there is also another problem: the magic stone that provides the school with magical power is empty and the school freezes to ice. Because Esther Edel ( Ethel Hallow ) used a trick to ensure that her big sister Esmeralda absorbs the magical power of the stone and thus regains her magic power. In order to magically replenish the stone, a witch has to sacrifice her magic power and the magic power of the coming family members over generations. This is what a magically conjured ancestor of Mildred told them, who had sacrificed her magical power and that of later generations of the Hoppel family. That also explains where Mildred got her magic power from: Actually only people from a witch family can do magic; Mildred thus comes from a family of witches, but her ancestor sacrificed the witchcraft of the generations before Mildred to save the magic stone.

Ms. Schimmel, who actually wanted to save Ms. Graustein's evil twin sister, changed her mind and gave the magic stone her magic power. She has decided to continue teaching art at the school as a non-magician.

Locations

The outdoor shots took place in Cheshire, England, and Hohenzollern Castle in Germany. The castle embodies the Graustein Academy for witches in the series.

Reviews

Martina Borgschulze from rtv.de said: Unfortunately, the series only comes up with “cheap gags”. “The figure drawing does not go beyond mere typing. This means that the British-German co-production is not only challenging its talented actresses, but also its audience. You can trust children more than a string of lousy jokes. "
