Leonard Jacobi
Leonard Simon Jacobi (born September 17, 1832 in Königsberg ; † April 17, 1900 in Charlottenburg ) was a German legal scholar and lawyer . From 1893 he was Professor of Law at the University of Berlin .
Life
He was born as the eldest son of the mathematician Carl Gustav Jacobi . His mother Marie (1809–1901) was the daughter of the merchant Schwinck from Königsberg in East Prussia . His father, only 46 years old, died unexpectedly of smallpox while he was still taking his Abitur exam . With great financial difficulties, Jacobi began studying law at Berlin University. He received his doctorate there in July 1854 for a doctorate in both rights with the dissertation Criminis falsi quaenam fuerit indoles in jure communi . In 1856 he passed the trainee lawyer and in 1859 the assessor exam .
In February 1859 he completed his habilitation at the law faculty of the University of Berlin with the habilitation thesis Article 83 of the General German Exchange Order and the so-called enrichment suit of common law as a private lecturer . For financial reasons he had to end his academic career first. Jacobi took over the acting representation of a judge's position in Rummelsburg and was soon promoted to district judge there. In 1862 he settled in Sömmerda as a lawyer . On October 15, 1867, he married Lucie Smith, an Englishwoman from St. Petersburg . In 1869 he was transferred to Beeskow and in 1874 to Berlin as a lawyer.
Through connection with a younger lawyer, he was able to dedicate himself to teaching again in 1883 as a private lecturer at the law faculty of Berlin University. As early as 1861 he had published a larger monograph The Doctrine of Useful Use in connection with the individual arrangements of the aequitas according to the General Prussian Land Rights, presented critically and systematically . He later also wrote expert opinions in the publications of the Verein für Socialpolitik and gave lectures in legal associations. In 1874 he wrote the trade legislation in the German Empire , in 1879 the trade company on the move and in the same year the factory legislation in the German Empire. The guilds appeared in 1881 under the Imperial Law of July 18, 1881 . The legal protection in German criminal proceedings and the establishment of the truth in criminal proceedings and compensation for the innocently persecuted , both from 1883, received attention in criminal law circles . His Akademische Praktika from 1887, the second edition of which appeared in 1897, was successful in publishing . This was followed by two treatises on the civil code , the origin and content of the draft of a civil code from 1888, and the personal marriage law of the civil code for the German Empire from 1897. The second edition appeared two years later and was dedicated to his 90-year-old mother . In 1891 Jacobi was appointed judicial councilor and in 1893 professor at the University of Berlin. After lengthy illnesses, he had to resign from his legal position in 1896.
Leonard Jacobi died on April 17, 1900 in Charlottenburg near Berlin, at the age of 67, after a serious stomach problem. According to his will of November 15, 1895, Jacobi donated a capital of 10,000 Reichsmarks to the Berlin University . The interest on this capital is to be used as a foundation after the death of his wife Lucie and as soon as women are allowed to matriculate at the Berlin university, to honor award work in the field of schooling, public education or public health.
